Several WWE Superstars got married in the past few years, and they have unique stories of how they met their wives/husbands.
Many wrestlers have found their significant others among their colleagues in the WWE locker room. Other superstars, however, found love outside WWE. They married women/men who have never entered a wrestling ring
Although some of these WWE Superstars' spouses were wrestling fans, a few were not interested in what went on inside the ropes before they met their significant others.
Throughout the past few years, several WWE Superstars have opened up about how they met their spouses. Some of them had unique stories behind finding the love of their lives. One WWE Superstar even found his significant other among the crowd at a WWE event.
Here are five WWE Superstars and the unique stories of how they met their wives/husbands.
#5. WWE Superstar Drew McIntyre
How Drew McIntyre met his wife Kaitlyn seems like a scene out of a romantic movie. The WWE Superstar was going through a hard time when he first met Kaitlyn. He was not satisfied with his role as a member of 3MB in WWE, and his mother had passed away less than a year earlier.
"Kaitlyn came into my life when I was spiralling down towards the inevitable end of my WWE career. I was drinking too much, having long nights out. I wasn't motivated about being in 3MB. I could no longer take my career seriously," McIntyre wrote in his book A Chosen Destiny: My Story. "Mostly, though, I just missed Mum being in the world. It was less than a year since we had lost her and, like the rest of the family, I was just crushed," he added.
Like in romantic movies, when everything is going wrong, the lead actor would find the person who would make it all right again. That is what happened to McIntyre when he found his current wife. In his book, he admitted Kaitlyn rescued him before he destroyed himself.
The former WWE Champion recalled their first meeting. McIntyre was with his best friend Sheamus in a bar when Kaitlyn and her friend approached them. Kaitlyn had recognized them from the gym she was working in as a receptionist.
"She (Kaitlyn) had no idea we were wrestlers. In fact, she had zero awareness of the wrestling industry (...) Kaitlyn remembers trying to engage me in conversation, but I was unforthcoming, shy, I guess, and she thought I didn't like her. She ended up chatting away to Sheamus and to some other guys that went to her school."
Despite not being able to talk to her all night, McIntyre felt an immediate connection with Kaitlyn and knew he had to get her number. However, he could not find the courage to ask her for the number until she said goodbye and walked into the parking lot.
"I forced myself to bite the bullet and go after her to ask her for her number. She gave it to me but looked completely taken aback because she thought I'd given her the brush-off earlier on."
Although their first encounter was a little awkward, the former WWE Superstar and Kaitlyn fell in love with each other later on. They tied the knot in 2016.
#4. WWE Superstar Mustafa Ali
WWE Superstar Mustafa Ali chose to leave his job as a police officer and pursue a pro wrestling career. However, he did not choose his wife, Uzma.
Ali married the woman his mother chose for him. He told the story in an interview with Tinted.
"My mom said, 'You are reckless, and you need to get married.' And I was like okay," Ali said.
Ali's future mother-in-law emailed a photo of her daughter to Ali's mother, who showed it to her son. The WWE Superstar liked her eyes as he revealed on Chasing Glory.
Ali went with his family to meet his wife-to-be at her parents' house. He followed a specific strategy because Uzma had a very religious Muslim family. The WWE Superstar decided to look at the floor the whole time.
"Her family is really really religious. And It's proper custom for men to lower their gaze when women are walking, so you are not staring (...) So we (Ali and Uzma) sit at the kitchen table and I'm like looking down and Uzma is like 'why are you staring at the floor' (serious tone), that's the first thing she told me," he recalled on Chasing Glory.
"I look up. I thought it was a trick so I was like slowly, I go 'Can I look at you?'. That was our first conversation. And she was like, 'Why are you being weird?', and I'm like, 'I'm not being weird. you are being weird.' I was like 'I'm following customs' and she is like 'pshhh'. I was like 'bro, you got...!'"
Despite Ali's embarrassing first encounter with his wife, the two married in January 2011. The WWE Superstar expressed his love for his wife many times on social media. They appeared together several times at WWE events, including WWE Hall of Fame ceremonies.
Ali and Uzma have a boy and a girl. Last June, Ali announced that they are now expecting their third child.
#3. WWE Superstar Randy Orton
Unlike Drew McIntyre and Mustafa Ali's wives, Randy Orton's wife, Kim, was a WWE fan before she met her husband.
Before meeting Orton, Kim believed that he would fall in love with her if they ever met. She revealed how they first met during her appearance on WWE Network's Table for 3.
"I went to a show. I knew he was gonna be there and like in my mind three years before I met him I would always say to everybody like 'Oh God, if we ever made out that's it, he is gonna fall in love with me. That was like my thing. I say 'I put it in in the universe and it gave me my thing,'" Kim said.
Kim was not mistaken. As she attended a live WWE show, Orton spotted her among the crowd. The Viper kept staring at his wife-to-be while performing in the ring. Another fan standing next to Kim even pointed it out to her.
"she is like: 'he keeps staring at you', and I'm like: 'I know', I go 'I thought it was me'. I'm standing right in the isle and he walks up to me and he is like 'What is your name because I need to know like what all this is about' and I'm like 'ahhh' I'm trying to play it so cool, I'm like 'My name is Kim', and we have been together ever since that day."
Orton and Kim tied the knot in 2015. They are raising five children, three from Kim's first marriage, one from Orton's, and their daughter.
#2. WWE Superstar Goldberg
There is nothing traditional about WWE Superstar Goldberg, including how he met his wife, Wanda.
Goldberg met his wife while filming a movie called Santa's Slay in 2005. In the movie, Goldberg played the role of a deranged Santa Claus while Wanda was a stunt woman. In an interview with NFL Network's Good Morning Football, he told the funny story of how they first met.
Goldberg had to shoot a scene inside a strip club set. Dressed as Santa Claus, he enters the place and kills a few people, then the bartender and a couple of patrons chase him throughout the bar.
"I hop up to the table, then I hop up to a swing, well she's sitting on the swing, so I'm in an extremely precarious situation if you would look at the logistics of me hanging from the swing, she's sitting on the swing, then I was very uncomfortable. And being 'Goldberg', I mean you're supposed to be the guy, right? So I'm sweating more than I am now," Goldberg said.
The WWE Superstar could not look up at Wanda, as he recalled. She tapped on his shoulder and asked him if he was fine.
"I said 'yeah, I'm fine' but I couldn't look up, obviously, and she says 'usually before a guy and I get this close he buys me a beer first'. And I look up at her and I said, 'I love you.'"
Earlier this year, Goldberg and his wife appeared on CNBC's Jay Leno's Garage. The former WWE Universal Champion and Wanda revealed they were both in relationships when they first met. The stunt woman broke up with her boyfriend the night she met Goldberg.
The couple married in April 2005. They have a son, Gage, who recently appeared with his father on WWE TV.
#1. WWE Superstar Eva Marie
Three weeks before Eva Marie's WWE tryout, her now-husband, Jonathan Coyle, followed her on Instagram because he thought she was pretty attractive. According to Eva Marie, Coyle liked a few of her photos, so she was curious to know who that guy was.
The WWE Superstar thought Coyle was cute after she checked out his Instagram profile and saw his CrossFit photoshoots.
"I think she commented on my post first. There is a CrossFit photo and I think she was like, 'oh, I wanna try CrossFit'. Of course, you wanna try CrossFit. How many girls that hit me up on Instagram being 'they want to try CrossFit?' So, I was like 'Alright, cool, she is super hot. I hit her back. I didn't give her my number, and this is before the days of DM or anything, so I'm not trying to give some girl my number who I didn't know. I was like 'hey, you can email me.' So I give her my work email," Coyle said in a video on his wife's YouTube channel.
About a day later, Coyle received an e-mail from Eva Marie with her phone number. As Coyle was about to text her, his phone crashed. After disappearing for some time, the CrossFit expert got in touch with Eva Marie to tell her what had happened, but she did not buy his excuse and thought he was rude.
A few days later, Coyle invited the WWE Superstar to train with him at his CrossFit gym in Los Angeles on a Saturday. Two days earlier, Eva Marie texted him saying she had already signed up for a CrossFit gym in Orange County and thanked him for his help. Coyle was surprised because he thought she did not really want to do CrossFit but hang out. It turned out he was wrong.
Following that, Coyle was determined to meet the 36-year-old. Despite his busy work schedule, he left the office to meet Eva Marie as she went to train on a Monday. While Coyle was warming up doing pull-ups, the WWE Superstar walked in, and he almost fell on his face.
"As I'm doing that, she walks in and it was like the movies where it's like 'It's the end of the world as we know it'. My life just went 'shooot' I remember getting so distracted that I almost busted my chin on a muscle up and I got down and I was like (speechless with an open mouth). She was like 'hey, what's up. I'm Natalie' and I'm like (speechless with an open mouth)."
From Eva Marie's side, she thought something was wrong with Coyle. The big macho CrossFit guy could not speak. He described their first encounter as awkward and weird. After their workout, Coyle walked Eva Marie to her car, said goodbye to her, and left.
Just as Eva Marie drove away, he called her and convinced her to turn back and go with him for a juice. Although the WWE Superstar thought he should have asked her while he walked her to the car, she accepted his invitation.
Eva Marie and Coyle tied the knot in 2014. Their wedding aired on WWE's reality show, Total Divas. The All Red Everything recently returned to WWE after nearly four years of absence.
